Making the transition from pool to race doesn't have to be stressful


For most participants, the open-water swim is usually the most foreign aspect of a triathlon. Many athletes train and practice in indoor or outdoor swimming pools, and the differences between swimming in a pool and swimming in open water are sizable.
One of the main differences is that most swimming pools are chlorinated, making it easy to see and more gentle on the eyes, mouth and stomach. There are minimal waves, currents or other types of resistance, and the temperature is usually around 80 degrees. Pools have lines painted on the bottom and sides, as well as lane ropes, to help swimmers swim in a straight direction.
