Eat Food

Mark from Kailua sent me an email and asked if I could put my diet and exercise tips into a very condensed and concise form. Apparently he's doing the New Years resolution thing and needs something to easy to follow.
I'll do it Mark, but first let me mention a few books that have shaped my thinking.
The first is
Dr. Citron's Evolutionary Diet. Dr Citron, an Oncologist, makes a very compelling case for sticking with the diet of our Cro-Magnon ancestors. Half of his book is a cookbook to show how you can do this and still have gourmet quality food. This book was published in 1998 but its well worth reading now. He makes a very strong argument that the modern diseases such as cancer, heart attack and stroke are caused by our modern diet.
Michael Pollan in his recent book
In Defence of Food
makes the same argument. In his very readable style he explains how modern food science has let us down. This book is very well researched and tough to argue with. He goes in a lot of detail about the food industry and how and when things changed in our diets. In stead of our Cro-Magnon ancestors he uses great grandma. If she didn't use it or if she wouldn't recognise it - don't eat it!
His books starts out with this wisdom: Eat food. Mostly plants. Not too much.

So Mark, with credit given to the above authors I give you this advice: Eat food not food products. Organic whenever possible. Drink mostly water. Exercise at least an hour a day 6 days a week. Get your heart pumping and your lungs working. Rest.

That's the post it on the refrigerator version.
