Upcoming XTERRA Events

There’s still a week left to join the fun and register to run in the XTERRA Lake Las Vegas Trail Runs.
The race is scheduled for April 9 at Lake Las Vegas, Henderson, Nev., and online registration is available at There are three courses to choose from (21 kilometers, 10 kilometers or 5 kilometers), and runners of all ages and skill levels are eligible to participate.
Lake Las Vegas Hawaiian Airlines WinnersRunners from 16 states and four countries have already registered, including several elite contenders in the 21K championship course.
In the men’s division, Colorado runners Andy Ames and Marty Wacker, Pennsylvania’s Richard Burgunder and Japan’s Fujio Miyachi are some of the runners to watch.
Burgunder has fared well in XTERRA Trail Runs on the East Coast, and will be entering the Las Vegas race for the first time. “I haven't heard too much about the course’s terrain, but am anxiously looking forward to a new adventure,” he said. “I expect that the weather will definitely play a role in the race for North Eastern athletes. We've had a very harsh winter, and it's currently snowing and in the low 30's here in Pittsburgh right now. It's going to be quite a change going from cold, wet weather, to a dry and hot climate.”
In the women’s division, Rachel Cieslewicz of Utah is returning to Las Vegas to defend the title she won last year. Cheryl Castle of Colorado is expected to be one of the other female contenders, and several others will likely enter in the days leading up to the race.
Hawaiian AirlinesThe fastest male and female runners in the 21K course will each receive a round-trip to Hawaii, courtesy of Hawaiian Airlines(2010 winners Rachel Cieslewicz and Jordan Bryden pictured above show their flight certificates). The trip will come in the form of frequent flier miles, and the winners will be encouraged to use it to compete in the XTERRA Trail Run World Championship at Kualoa Ranch, Hawaii, in December.

Fujio Miyachi is one of the top trail runners in Japan, and he is trying to make a difference for his home country.
He will set up a donation box at the registration desk for the XTERRA Lake Las Vegas Trail Runs in an effort to raise money for the victims of the earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan last month. Money raised will be sent to Civic Force, which is a non-profit organization in Japan that provides emergency services for victims of disasters.

When we think of trail running, the vision of trees, mud, creeks and roots are most likely what comes to mind. Leave it to XTERRA to find the perfect trail run with a huge twist.
Rachel C VegasThe XTERRA Lake Las Vegas Trail Runs is proof that you don't need trees, mud, creeks or roots to have a fabulous trail. The Lake Las Vegas race features an incredible desert setting, and it is one of my favorite races of the year. Yes, the race is a 30-minute drive away from the Las Vegas Strip. But no, this is not a theme trail with bright neon lights to lure you in. It is simply a slice of heaven. The 21-kilometer championship course starts in an oasis-like setting, then heads out to the desolate Southern Nevada desert.
Some people have described the course as "racing on the moon." I suppose that can be true if the moon has an incredible race-start background inspired by Tuscany.  Imagine starting a race in an oasis - beautiful, perfectly-manicured landscape, water features, and Lake Las Vegas nearby. Be ready though, as the moon-like terrain takes over shortly after the start.

The Pure Austin XTERRA Camp Eagle Trail Run is scheduled for Sunday, April 3, at Rocksprings, Texas. It will be the second event of the 2011 XTERRA Texas Trail Run Series. The event will feature a 16-kilometer long course and a 6-kilometer short course.
It will be the first of two races in two weeks for the Texas Series. On April 17, the XTERRA Waco Trail Runs will be held at Cameron Park, Waco, Texas.
