Interesting anecdote, the Coach Bill that Jeff refers to, is a disciple of Doc Counsilman and his father was good friend. I believe they actually sat down to dinner once or twice when Bill was still a kid. Bill got my attention a few years ago and held it long enough for me to fully appreciate the training method of 4 or 5 weeks building intensity and ending with one week rest, with each complete cycle building on performance times,... and for me, at the end of nine months, I had dialed down my swimming interval time (100's) from 1:45 to 1:20 and hitting under 1:00! Hypoxic sets were huge!
Long before I ever heard of hypoxic training I just wanted to prepare for big wave surfing . . .so I started swimming with rocks (that was in high school)and doing sprints while holding my breath, both the running and swimming kind. I was stoked to learn there is some physiology behind it all.
